I was trying to find a quote that fit both Pride – which culminates downtown this weekend, of course – and Canada Day, now just under a week away. As you well know, July 1st is our country's 148th birthday. The problem this year is that the placement of this holiday makes planning a vacation even more challenging than usual.
If you have the option, do you take the Monday and Tuesday of next week off and stretch it into a nice five-day weekend...or next Thursday and Friday off, doing the same? Maybe you're lucky, smart (or both) and are taking the whole week off.

Well, that was a late night; we got home on Tuesday at 11:40 pm. Rob and I both said that we can't do concerts any more unless it's the Beatles...and, well, you know that's not likely. But by yesterday morning, even with barely more than two hours' sleep (that ever-firing brain of mine just didn't want to shut down) I had to say...it was totally worth it.

It's the time of year when lockers are cleaned out, good-byes are said and it's out with the old: a time of endings for the school year, hazy dreams of easy summer days and long, light, gentle evenings. There's something going around called “Convocation Addresses in One Sentence” and I love the idea.

How I wish I could remember the exact wording of a quote I read a few months ago. Because it keeps bouncing around my head today like a little white ball on a spinning roulette wheel - a wheel, that in the case of my brain, never does come to a complete stop.
Please, take a moment to listen to this in today's AUDIO JOURNAL. I promise it makes more sense and is more enjoyable that way! :)

I had a whole journal written for today, what would have been Lauren and Phil's second wedding anniversary. Another one of those tough firsts that we all know are coming, but can take us out at the knees all the same. But I scrapped it. I just couldn't ask Rob to put in photos and links to videos from that special day, as he would have been doing it yesterday. And his first Father's Day without a call or card or visit from Lauren was tough enough.

Hey there – happy Friday! We have something special for you today: not one, but two one-minute videos.
First, as promised, a quick little bit with Phil and Colin. We paid them a visit this past Tuesday and I thought a nice shot of cuteness would be a lovely way to pay tribute to a new dad on his first Father's Day.

Tomorrow here I'll share a video of Colin and his daddy, as we get set for Father's Day on Sunday. This weekend also coincides with the beginning of the sweetest season of the year for me – and I'm guessing most Canadians – summer.

I'm going to confess to you something that you probably already figured, knowing me as you do by now: I've been having a tough go of it for the past week.
Oh, I didn't lie on Friday when I said here “that was easy” about Thursday's return: it was a smooth transition back to the chair I've occupied almost continuously since 1988. But as my work life has returned pretty much to normal, it's only emphasized just how “off” the rest of my life has been.

Yesterday I mentioned here a blessed sighting of two beautiful orioles at our cottage. You may remember I had another bird encounter – this time I was encroaching on her territory – so I thought it was time to tell you how that all came out.
A month-and-a-half ago, which seems like an eternity now, given all that's transpired, I wrote here about a robin's nest that had been built while we were away from the cottage for a few weeks, right next to our front door.

Welcome in. This weekend we set aside an afternoon to read and take in the messages of condolence that had been mailed to us in the past month. But I just had to share with you today a couple of things that happened – even beyond the caring words and thoughtful gestures of people whose messages began, “We haven't met, but....” You're going to love them.

A short time ago a pal bought me one of those silly automated voice buttons from Staples that says, “That Was Easy” when you push it. My nephew David has gotten great glee out of the looks his mom gives him when he activates it. But today those three words are going through my head. Because you know what? It was.
From the moment I arrived yesterday morning in the CHFI studios to one great big Night at the Roxbury sandwich hug from Mike, Ian and Gord, I knew we were going to be all right. And you know, we were. And it was easy.

Here we are. I'm back with my work family today – in the centre of what has been the most soul soothing circle of love and support for which any person could ever wish.

Why today? The better question, to Rob and me, is: if not today, then when?

A dear friend suggested I stay away from work until we'd made our way through this sea of grief and disbelief. But the truth is simple: we'll never be through it.
