March 2016

March 31, 2016

Welcome to the final day of March. It's been a tumultuous month in the news, especially on the home front, with the weather reflecting the instability, the ups and downs of a city's emotions. I, for one, will be glad to see the end of it. So will my umbrella.

Welcome to Wednesday - a day that will stand out in Toronto history for the final farewells to a mayor like no other. Our thoughts today are with the family of Rob Ford and the many who are mourning his contributions to this city we love.

Well we made it - through Thursday (another milestone), through the ice storm, through the rainy drive home yesterday from Ottawa. And all is well.

Maybe it's the four mornings of sleeping past 3:30 am - past 7:00 am actually - but I feel lighter of heart today, and Rob does, too. I can't possibly rule out the kindness of so many emails that were sent our way late last week, offering us support and encouragement as we traversed yet another crossing in our walk through this first year without our Lauren. So, thank you.

I'm going to ask you to click on the audio journal if you can today. Somehow it means more to hear me share today's thoughts in my own voice - if you'll indulge me. If you'd rather not, that's okay, too. I'm just grateful you're here.

I begin with words of condolence to the family of former mayor and councillor Rob Ford. In a most noteworthy life, there were surely a great many more chapters yet to be written. May his soul be at rest; your hearts at peace.

To today's journal.

When it comes to being connected to each other in the 21st century, truly these are the best and the worst of times (thank you, Charles Dickens). What Dickens was no doubt referring to - besides, of course, pre-revolutionary France, if my high school English class serves me - was social media.

And...it's spring - first full day today at that. What better way to "spring" into a brand new week than with a Coco video?

Happy Friday! Did you get a St. Patrick's Day card yesterday? Although greeting cards aren't a huge part of the celebrations, we do spend around 5 billion dollars in North America on and around March 17th. I didn't get a card (didn't send any, either), but as I've told you, I am a fan of cards for people close to us. Sometimes I need people to see something they can prop up on a table for a few days and know they were thought of, fondly, as just the right card was chosen for them on their day.

I am doing some finger math here and coming up with Canada Day. Because how else do I make sense of the number of birthday cards I've had to purchase for special days over the next few weeks?

There have been some serious fireworks on or before Canada Day and, yes, you know what I'm talking about. Seems many of us just celebrated the beginning of summer by getting "twitterpated" as old Friend Owl said in the ancient Bambi movie.

Foggy, rainy, kind of dark...not an easy Monday to get through, but you did it. We did it. And since the feedback I got told me that the video of little Colin helped, I have a bit more for you today. Colin's just being a little sweetie with his bear - he's such a playful little guy. But first, I can't figure out if I'm the Queen of Overthinking, or a poster girl for Do-It-Yourself.

Oh, what a lovely prelude to spring we enjoyed this weekend! From listening to the Blue Jays on Ottawa radio as we made our way home from another visit to Coco and his father, to the record warmth that enveloped Toronto (and many other hot spots), it made the early Easter that comes in under two weeks' time seem perfectly normal.

Here we are - a Friday again. Second week with Darren B. Lamb is under our belts and we're just thrilled that people - you - have welcomed my new partner with open arms.

This weekend we set our clocks ahead one hour (which means Monday Momma's gonna need one extra coffee, 'cause those 60 minutes are even more precious when you're missing them at 3 am).

We went to bed on Tuesday night to the sad but not unexpected news that the father of Canadian hero Terry Fox, Rolland Fox, had died at the age of 80. But it was the headline to which we awoke yesterday that felt like a kick to the stomach: the death of Beatles' producer Sir George Martin at the age of 90. And so began our own trip, not down Penny, but Memory Lane.

So, I had a nice visit a little while back with my Dad. But what's that saying, "No good deed goes unpunished?" Yeah, that'd be me.

Part of our time off last month, in addition to spending the better part of a week really getting to know Darren B. Lamb, my new radio partner, was spent visiting with my Dad. I wish the stay had been longer, but our two-night stop in Kelowna began with Dad meeting us at the airport, wearing what you might call part of his new uniform.

I'm so glad I already said I'd share a food experiment with you today. Otherwise, I'd lose my mind over some of the inane comments on our Facebook page at CHFI yesterday from people actually upset over the Amber Alert that came through on Sunday night.

There's this game I play with two people on my phone called Draw Something. It's a bit like Pictionary and I'm disproportionately proud of the fact that my pal Lisa and I are up to almost 1800 exchanges. But there's a little reminder there that I still don't quite know what to do with. After all, it's not like I need a reminder at all....

Friday! "I'm as corny as Kansas in August," as the song from Oklahoma! goes, but this is a day that stands out for me on the calendar. Because March Fourth sounds like "March Forth!" and I've always been fond of it as a reminder to just keep moving in the right direction, with focus and determination. That's what this week has been about.

It was one of those times in my life where I've sat there going, "Is this for real? Am I actually here, right now?" The "here" was Suzanne Somers' and Alan Hamel's house in Palm Springs.

To tell you the truth, I wasn't sure I was going to share the experience with you - sounds like some pretty obvious name-dropping - but after Suzanne's impromptu call in to our show at 8:30 yesterday morning (an ungodly 5:30 am where she is), I thought, why not? so here we go!

By now you've heard that longtime City News anchor Gord Martineau did his final newscast on Monday evening. I was teary during an in-home chat with Gord that aired on City News last night; he was emotional talking about his co-workers and grateful to viewers. So bittersweet. Today I'd like to share with you a story of Gord, me and a deceptive coffee cup. And, as usual, I found a way to put my foot in my mouth.

Well, now that we've got THAT under our belt...time for show #2! Welcome to Tuesday and March, the latter of which appears (as per the old saw) to be coming in like a lion weather-wise. But I have to say all I'm seeing is lamb. From the show opener at 5 am, Darren B. Lamb, my new partner, just fit in yesterday like a pair of yoga jeans.
