April 29, 2016

We've made it through another week as we shiver toward May. Another cool weekend's on the way, but we were treated to a truly heartwarming experience yesterday and I'm so glad to be able to share it with you today.

Well, this is a special day on our show. International music superstar Keith Urban is stopping by for a chat; it's his first interview in what promises to be a busy day filled with them, so we get to make what we hope is a solid impression on him. We are very excited about that; his new album Ripcord is exceptional and drops next week.

They say you never forget your firsts: kisses, lovers and all of those wonderful things that make life so special.
Yesterday, I was quietly remembering the first time I sang an anthem at a Blue Jays' game: such a beautiful, hot sunny day at the Rogers Centre that they had the roof open. Imagine that! The year was 1989 and it was exciting, nerve wracking and a day I'll always remember.
Last week marked another first and all of those wonderful emotions came rushing back.

I've got to get this off my chest.
Before the needle was ripped off the soundtrack of so many people's lives Thursday with the passing of Prince, the story of the week was Michael Strahan blindsiding Kelly Ripa and leaving the show to go to Good Morning America.

What a difference a weekend makes. From Friday to Sunday afternoon, some 48 hours with Colin and his dad have lifted our hearts and given us the love and warmth Rob and I need to get through the next month. And we are grateful.
So, what to share with you today? That's the question.

Today's journal was written with an event last night in mind, but it was the news yesterday - of a cultural icon and music pioneer's shocking and untimely passing at age 57 - that has been heavy on our hearts. Rest in peace, Prince Rogers Nelson. You gave and you gave. And we are grateful.

And I had to do just that on account of the guys I work with. After the picture in yesterday's journal of the five letters that are worn off my computer keyboard, I was schooled in the art of anagrams; technical wizard Gord "on the board" Rennie pointed out that HEART also spells EARTH (timely for tomorrow's Earth Day) and Steve Roberts let me know that the keys could be spelling HATER. Har-dee-har-har, guys!

Someone wise once said, "When you don't know what to write, start writing." The act of stimulating the fingertips somehow sparks the brain and the thought process, like some kind of sluggish barbecue starter, finally catches fire.
So, I'm typing.
[My audio journal today is from a very cool list of things of which we all need to be reminded, and ought to pass along. Maybe you'll give it a listen. But you've come here to read something and so here we go.]

My mother used to say to me, "You're so lucky - you should buy lottery tickets!" and my answer to her would always be that we'd already won the lottery, so I didn't need to enter.
Yesterday, I changed my tune and bought five tickets to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Home Lottery. It's a wonderful cause that would sure add some diversion to our lives!

This promises to be an adventure: Darren and I (probably as you read this) are doing our first remote broadcast together.

A day to wrap up a colourful week on the show - in, oh, so many ways. And a lesson learned with a happy ending, but not in the way that you might think....
Well, about those flowers. As it turns out, not only was I totally ripped off in my online attempt to save some money and brighten my Monday, but, to add insult to injury, I was charged in American money. So that discount check-out bouquet I ordered ended up costing me about $70.

As we approach May and two dates that loom very large and heavily on our hearts, I am dedicating the next several weeks in my meditation and my thoughts to the suffering of other mothers - other parents - who have been dealt the same loss as Rob and I. I'd like to share one such woman's uplifting story with you today.

I'm going to call this one ,"I should have known better." It's about me and Murphy's Law when it comes to flowers.
I'm not talking about the kind that grow; with those I have no law, no luck at all. The closest I ever got to seeing success in the garden came at least 20 years ago when I watched the lily bulbs I planted sprout and then start to gingerly reach their green points towards the sky.

Today's journal (a special video version just for you) was inspired by a listener email. What was a sweet request for help turned - at least in my mind - into a gentle poke. It turned out well (for both of us) and I think you'll enjoy the outcome.

They called it "An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life." But we beg to differ.
They're two showbiz veterans - legends, some would say - and the chance to see both Steve Martin and Martin Short on one stage was too much to pass up for the thousands who took in the show in the always pleasing theatre at Casino Rama on Saturday night.

I know I'm a week-and-a-half late, but I've been on a bit of an Easter egg hunt over the past few days. Hope the ending is as sweet as the anticipation!

By now you've probably heard the sad news - or read it on our CHFI Facebook page - that my new radio partner Darren delivered on the air yesterday: his beloved Maya was gently sent to her rest on Saturday.
I've never seen a man more in love with a dog. Maya was his girl - his beloved companion for over 12 years - and he loved this beautiful golden doodle with all of his heart and soul. Here are the contents of the email he sent out to friends on Saturday:

I remember as a child a little song from Sesame Street. And it went like this: "That's about the size - where you put your eyes - that's about the size of it!" The song was about perspective, and today: where we put our eyes.
I'm writing this as I sit with foil in my hair under a dryer. Got to my hairdresser's place yesterday morning before she did; it was a rare Monday opening for her, since she has some travel starting today, and Paula was delayed by weather-related traffic.

Today: two journals. The written one here includes pictures from Ian MacArthur's birthday bash and I think you'll enjoy it. But it's a much quieter celebration on our audio journal and I invite you to click there when you've scrolled through here. It's for my lifeline. My hero. My best friend - my Rob on his birthday.

I have a special journal for you today - a first. And being the first of April, no fooling, it's fitting. I'd like to read you a little story, and you can listen to it in today's audio journal, or watch a video Rob and I have made.
The book is called Wherever You Are (my love will find you) by Nancy Tillman and it came to me thanks to a listener's suggestion. It's for anyone whose heart goes with someone - whether they're big or small; an assurance that they (or you) are never alone.
