September 30, 2016

How can this be - the last day of September? Have we seen our last 2016 baseball game at Rogers Centre? Hopefully not. The regular season at home ended last night, but there's the hunt for the wild card spot.

We're not sitting pretty like we were last year, but there's always hope: Detroit, Seattle and Baltimore are standing between us and the post-season. I don't get the wild card math (Rob explains it and I'm like I want to put on those glasses that have the open eyeballs while mine drift closed) but we'll see. Fingers crossed.

Today's journal and our show is dedicated to our friend and co-worker (Music Director and Asst. Program Director) Julie James. We're on our way to Cobourg today, many of us from the CHFI Family, as we offer support and love to Julie's family upon the loss of Julie and her brothers' mom, Anne.

Today's journal, you're just going to have to listen to. It's Rob on guitar and me at the mic. Really, it's worth it.

I went to the doctor yesterday and, just as we figured, my cold has migrated south. And maybe it's the drugs, but I was inspired. So, without any further ado....or autotune...here we go.

(To the tune of "Happy Christmas")....

And so it's Bronchitis -
And what can I do?
I'm thankful it's nothing
Like pneumonia or flu

And so it's Bronchitis
I'm coughing a tonne
My energy's flagging

(By the way - the Audio Journal is back today.)

It was a quiet day, a pensive day; a day spent in denim shirt and track pants, just padding around a silent empty place until Rob came up north to join me in that sacred space where sleep comes more easily. Not easily, just more easily.

83-years-old: imagine that. The bowtie of the veteran CBS newsman, a guy who can tell a story in rhyme (truly a broadcaster after my own heart), is to be honoured in the Smithsonian Institute. Charles Osgood will be replaced by another veteran anchor, Jane Pauley, who turns 66 next month. Often the brunt of jokes for having a stranglehold on the senior end of the viewing demographic, CBS appears not quite ready to throw away their viewers' loyalty. That's to be commended.

Thanks for your notes of kindness and well wishes this week as I fought a cold. Okay, I lost, but I'll live. Usually I will work through sickness, but this time I chose not to and am so grateful to the team at CHFI for letting me sleep (and sleep and sleep) for a few days. I plan to do the same this weekend, too!

Today's journal has a guest author: my radio partner and friend, Darren B. Lamb. Molly stayed at Darren's last weekend and when I asked if he'd share the experience, he didn't hesitate. (Little did I know I'd be off sick and be extra grateful for his contribution.) There's no audio journal today and I hope to be back here tomorrow, but in the meantime, enjoy today's offering from Darren, inspired by our little 12-year-old Lhasa-Chin, Molly.

For as long as I can remember, I have had a huge love for dogs (and all animals…but, first and foremost, dogs).

There's no audio journal today, and here's why: I've taken a sick day today to cope with a sore throat - and beg Rob's forgiveness for passing it on to him. Come to think of it, maybe he gave it to me! Ah well, when you're married, it doesn't much matter. Everything is shared. Or, as you'll read here in a bit, not everything....

I wasn't going to write a journal for today, but I have to get something off this somewhat congested chest.

It's pronounced "Grace-lund". Not "Grace-LAND", despite Paul Simon's song and what we've thought all along. I guess the woman who lived there, and later took it upon herself to protect and share the place, ought to know.

That's just one thing I took away from an intimate sit-down with Priscilla Presley at Casino Rama on Saturday night.

I have something special to share with you. As you may recall, a fellow bereaved mom named Barbara has been so kind in sharing her wisdom, her pain and her dragonfly creations with me here (and with other journal visitors who have reached out to her). Like a salve to my soul this week, she sent the most beautiful email.

Can I just say off the top how much I appreciate you coming by to share a little slice of this upside-down life of ours? Well, I do! So, thank you. And your comments - on Twitter, on Facebook (when I post the rare link to the journal at CHFI) and in emails - are read and loved.

Sometimes in our lives, we find ourselves in a situation that has no answers. People are cruel, fate is unkind; we can find no way to explain or understand why. But if we're truly lucky, there are little hands to hold our own that make the world seem all right, if even for a short time. And we are grateful for the moments and the memories.

A note off the top about last Friday's journal: if you're looking for tickets to Fashion for the Cure, being held one month tonight in aid of Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket and in memory of our daughter, please go to "What's Up" on my home page. Sorry if that information wasn't obvious - and we'll see you at Cardinal Golf Club in one month!

Ah, here it is - a day filled with 9s and you can read more about the significance placed on this date by numerologists in yesterday's journal. But today, we look ahead. And I'd love to tell you about something special happening in just over a month.

Two years ago, in October of 2014, we were anxiously watching the calendar. Our very first grandbaby - a boy, we knew - was on his way, but seemed to be taking his time. Every phone call made us jump; every text had us leaping for our phones.

If you know me at all, you know that some numbers loom very large in my life - particularly 8s. I could list them all: 62 (year born), 26 (day), 88 (year I married Rob and started at CHFI), 24 (Lauren's birthday and age of passing), her birth year 91 (9-1=8), Rob's birthday (4th of 4th month) - stuff like that.

Erin Davis in grade school

You did it. You made it through the "first day", whether that was of school for your children (or you, if you teach) or just getting back into the swing of heavier traffic and the whole "back to everything" vibe. Rob and I managed to fit in two meetings, a workout and (for me) the show, plus a four-hour nap! So that's about as "back to" as you can get.

Our audio journal has returned after a summer hiatus. Enjoy!

Ah, the tears - the tears! Whether of joy (having your child or children back in someone else's care for a few hours of each day), sadness (as they walk out the door, leaving you and heading towards whatever milestone lies in wait), or frustration (just trying to get children, who've slept 'til noon, up for a bus at 7:30 am). It's an emotional day all around.

Today, as we head into the long weekend before everything goes "back to" on Tuesday, I wanted to revisit something.

Our dear friends, senior producer Ian "The General" MacArthur and his wife Anita have three children. On Tuesday, while daughter Ava begins high school, her older brother Campbell will start college. College! As hard as that is for me to believe, I can only imagine how "Ianita" (our celeb couple name for them) are shaking their heads!

I happened to shoot some video that, in retrospect, is more appropriate today than I would have imagined when we captured it last Saturday.
