Welcome to a brand new week - almost a new month. By the way, if you've heard me mention Caru dog food in my journal in the past (it's Molly's absolute favourite, and I've even tried it!) you can take advantage of a limited-time special offer of a $1 off coupon by going to the 'What's Up' section on my homepage and clicking on the link there, or just click here.

Ah, the weekend. While you may feel like cocooning and perhaps getting the crockpot going, I'll be with you for half of that; then Sunday it's glitz, glamour, heels and lashes as I host the Celebration of Hope for Markham Stouffville Hospital.

I told some of this story at around 8:20 yesterday morning on CHFI, but there's so much more to it. It's about signs: watching for them, paying attention to them, and getting a little heart squeeze from believing (or knowing) that someone is with you, no matter how far away they are.

Ah, the 26th. Two months today it'll all be over. All of the "fa-la-la", all of the "humbug" (or worse), all of the clenched fists and voices raised, not in joyful sound, but in frustration and anger. All of the Christmas crankiness that's already peeking around the corner like some hungover Elf on a Shelf.

It's funny how timing works out: a few weeks ago, a listener named Alex heard me talk with Darren on the air about having owned a Mini Cooper way back in the day. Alex remembered he had saved a full-page article from the National Post and hand-delivered it to the Rogers Campus (what we call the buildings that are home to so many elements of the company's business).

Hope you had a lovely weekend, and got a chance to see the leaves before the fall winds and rains defeat their tenuous grips.
Debbie Cooper and Anita MacArthur (wives of my former radio partner and current friend and senior producer, respectively) joined with me in a girls' weekend. We spent it sipping tea, enjoying a little pampering and a bit of dining and shopping. If it sounds divine - it was.

A girls' weekend! I can hardly believe it, but I'm spending a few days in the company of two women who've held my heart in their hands the past nearly 18 months and have been my friends long before that. More on Monday, if I can even get off the massage table.

Well, that was amazing. (Sorry there's no audio journal today; it was just too late an evening.)

Around the noon hour yesterday came news on Twitter that Ken Pagan is no longer with Postmedia. Who's Ken Pagan? Here's the story in brief, and a statement from his former employer:

Hey, heads up - you are guaranteed to enjoy today's journal more in the audio version (just click on the play button above). Here we go:
I want to thank Karen Preston Miller for her post yesterday on CHFI's Facebook page:

Let's get our game on!!!....PLEASE play 'BLUE JAYS ARE NUMBER ONE' (in our hearts, anyway) by Erin and The Generations...and play it often!!!!!!! Thank you! We were just listening to an old World Series CD on the way home from the cottage, and it got everyone pumped!

Fashion For the Cure

I promised you that I would share some moments from a special night held to raise money for patient care at Southlake Regional Health Centre. In our daughter Lauren's memory, it was put on to help fund critically needed equipment across the maternal child program, including a transport isolette for the NICU.

I'm writing this in the car. It's 11 pm and we're just coming home from a night of fun, fundraising and fashion in Newmarket.
It was a beautiful, very busy evening and I'd love to share with you a highlight: a painting, as it was being done, of a favourite photo of Rob's and mine. But since it's far too late to be writing, editing and posting photos (never mind coherent thoughts), I'll ask you to come back tomorrow for them, as well as my audio journal. My apologies.

Thanks for coming by. I'm preparing today for an event tonight in Newmarket that raises money for Southlake Regional Health Centre and, in particular, a travel incubator/layette in Lauren's memory.
I'm happy to tell you that the event is a sellout, and I'm so grateful to the organizers of Fashion For the Cure tonight at Cardinal Golf and Country Club. Hope to tell you about it tomorrow if I have the energy when it's over; if not, it'll be Friday's journal.

Oh my goodness, what a weekend! So much has happened since last we checked in: an astounding end to a three-game Blue Jays' sweep on Sunday night was so sweet that I didn't even bother to watch the Clinton/Trump debate on the PVR. I was in far too good a mood! And the day had been so rewarding in other ways.
I'll tell you how, in a moment, but first...

Thanksgiving weekend. For those of us caught up in the ALDS, we're plenty thankful already: a decisive 10-1 Game 1 win over Texas buys a bit of breathing space in a short, 5-game series. So there's that!
But of course, no matter what the T-shirts say, baseball isn't life. It can be a welcome distraction, that's for sure. And Rob and I have welcomed the back-to-back years that have seen our favourite team make it into post-season play.

There's something about birds and our show these days: whether it's the Blue Jays and Orioles from Tuesday night (and now just the Jays getting set for this afternoon's first ALDS matchup in Texas), or Edwin Encarnacion running the bases in that fantastic Wild Card game-winning home run at 11:32 pm, taking his "parrot" for a walk late on a Tuesday night, there's plenty of aviary action on the baseball side.

Full disclosure: I'm writing this before last night's first pitch. I didn't want to take time during the big game to write, or to ask Rob to pause the game so we could record the audio journal. So this isn't going to be about baseball (which I'm sure will come as a relief to some)!
Here's a pic of the five of us from the studio yesterday in our full Blue Jays garb yesterday as we cheered on Canada's baseball team before the wild card one-off (L-R: Darren B. Lamb, me, Ian "The General" MacArthur, Gord Rennie and Steve Roberts).

So I got all inspired on the weekend. In digging through our freezer, I found some chicken thighs. Remembering that I had a cupboard laden with big cans of diced tomatoes, some tomato paste and some mushrooms, as well as an ancient half-used onion in the fridge, I had an a-ha moment: cacciatore! And that's what I made.

Welcome to Monday - hope you had a restful few days. I was a busy girl this weekend - we're decluttering in a pretty big way - and, of course, the Blue Jays were busy proving once again that as a wise man said, "It ain't over 'til it's over." (Thanks, Yogi Berra.) A wild card game tomorrow night at Rogers Centre for the right to take on the Texas Rangers. Fingers crossed.
