It's been a long time: over three months since we've seen him, which is the longest time we've gone without seeing the little guy since we awaited his birth in 2014.
Colin will be two-and-a-half on the 11th of next month and he's a very tall little man. And cool, too, judging by this picture that was sent to us a few weeks back!

Thanks for all of your comments on Facebook yesterday about the whole carry-on issue. Some expressed their disdain for people who try to get by without paying for luggage by piling all of their earthly belongings into a duffel bag and then trying to cram said body-sized bag into the overhead compartment. It just doesn't fly, in more ways than one, and I get that and agree wholeheartedly.

As you may recall, yesterday's quote had to do with using pain to fuel our journey. Today's journal is about the pain that comes with a journey. A weighty issue, for sure.

Lauren in Mexico

Here we are - we made it to Monday. Actually, making it to Saturday was our aim last week, and we did. And we partly have you to thank for it.

26 years ago today our lives were forever changed for the better. For the best. This is the day that our baby arrived - the one who gave me such an easy pregnancy and birth that I was looking forward to having another child and told my ob-gyn as much at my very first post-natal appointment.

Welcome in, and thank you for coming by. Tomorrow's journal is a special one for our daughter Lauren's birthday with a video I've been sitting on for decades, but today you've been asking about how Molly's little vacation was, and I thought I'd fill you in on that and one other anecdote.
You know this if you travel: coming home from a trip is a little bittersweet. It's always made so much more bearable (or enjoyable, however you want to look at it) when someone is awaiting your return.

I mentioned here yesterday that it would have been Rob's Dad's 100th birthday and today's journal was written with Rob's assistance. Usually he edits so "you and I" turns into "you and me" and there's a colon or semicolon in the right place (plus he gets this thing recorded and put up on the internet daily) but today it's a special kind of collaboration. Here we go.

There's no audio version today, but it returns tomorrow (travel days, you know). And before I carry on with today's journal, I want to make note of this momentous day in our family's life.

Secrets Puerto Los Cabos, Mexico

Happy Spring! I may have suggested there wouldn't be an audio journal today; it's a travel day as we head home from Los Cabos in Mexico, a spot we've never visited before.
I thought that I'd have lots of touristy pictures for you, but true to ourselves, Rob and I kind of cocooned at our resort, rather than venturing out. But there will be natural beauty, I promise!

Where is Molly Malone these days? A fitting question, given that this is St. Patrick's Day and you couldn't ask for a more Irish name! I know that not a lot of people give their dogs a last name different from their own, but somehow when you have a Molly, adding the name from a famous song about a gal who sold cockles and mussels ("alive, alive-o") made sense.

Today marks a birthday back in the studios in Toronto (I almost wrote "back home" - force of habit) and it just drives home for me how I'm missing some of the people who brightened our lives every single day. Actually, I awoke last week thinking of Gord Rennie - must be because I saw he was active on Facebook the night before - and wondered how he was.

March 15th - Beware the Ides of March, they said! Meh. I'm more into idling than ides this March 15th and that's why Rob and I have taken off to the sun for a few days.

I promised you yesterday that since you could well be feeling slammed with the loss of an hour's sleep on the weekend, thanks to the change to Daylight Saving Time, I had something that helped me.
For many years - most of the years since I was 18 or 19 years old - I was up long before the sun. A lot of those years, I got up and snuck around in the dark as most anyone working the pre-dawn hours does. But when I returned to CHFI in 2005, true to his promise to me and the gods, Rob began getting up with me and sharing my hours.

Hope you had a restful weekend, despite losing an hour's sleep yesterday. For maybe the first time ever, the move to Daylight Saving Time didn't knock me for a loop. You see, when you get up at 3:30 am each day, it doesn't take much to feel as if your body clock is an iPhone that got dropped into the toilet. And you don't know when you'll start to feel "normal" - whatever that is - again.

Welcome to Friday. Happy Mario Day! March 10th...Mar-10. Yeah...anyway, I need to remind you to set your clocks ahead this Sunday morning (or more likely Saturday before you go to bed as you finish dancing to Coop's Classics on 98.1 CHFI) and the reason I'm reminding you is that it totally slipped my mind until I saw Steve Roberts' tweet about it on Tuesday!

That, of course, is the Serenity Prayer, long associated with Alcoholics Anonymous and written by Reinhold Niebuhr for a sermon he was delivering way back in 1934. I've found myself pondering that prayer more and more lately, especially as it pertains to politics.

Happy International Women's Day - today's theme is "Be Bold for Change". Here's to phenomenal women and if you're not one, that probably means you're a man and you know one. Or several. I have a neat story to share with you today.

Hallelujah, we've found a new doctor. After hearing it was going to be at least another three months until we learned whether we'd passed the audition (or at least, our applications were accepted) at the local health centre, it came down to a family member asking his doctor if he'd take two new patients. The answer was "yes" and so we met our new doctor yesterday and are in the process of getting caught up on tests. And the roots grow just a little more.

I'd like to start with a special shout-out to journal listener Renée, who tweeted on Friday that she uses Bluetooth streaming to listen to my journal every day when she's in the car. I love that. I love that we're still in touch - you and I - and I don't just mean Renée. I'm just grateful that technnology has let us do this. And who knows what may come in the future? So, thank you.

Another weekend almost here and I've been looking forward to this day since January: my sister and her husband are flying in from Penticton for the weekend. We've lots of plans, including hosting a birthday dinner for my aunt, which means a two-year-old and a five-month-old coming to the house, and we can't wait.

Since this coming Saturday is March 4th, the day I've always thought was unique in that it tells us what to do, as in "March forth! Go!", I'll share with you today how we've moved forward. It's a small step, but it's brought a bit of normalcy to this surreal experience we're having as we detach from our former lives.

Welcome to March. As the rain in today's forecast promises to melt the last of Monday's couple of centimetres of snow, I wish you a gentle first of the month. Sure looks as if March is coming in like a lamb, if the forecast I'm seeing for Toronto is accurate. Enjoy. And, yes, I'm jealous!
