Well, here it is, Halloween - the first in our new neighbourhood. Given how hilly our streets are (and how steep some of the driveways) we're told by our neighbour not to expect more than a handful of trick-or-treaters tonight. Still, that will be five more than we've had come to our door anywhere for years!

I thought I'd share with you a really neat story I came across thanks to the Washington Post. Yes, I've been reading the Post a lot lately, waiting for one, two or an entire rack of shoes to drop. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Thanks for sharing your own stories this week on Facebook about your customer service experiences. It's amazing how a small gesture can engender loyalty for life or, conversely, make you want to shout from the rooftops to avoid that company at all costs!

Today, I'm in neither court because I'm not sure how I feel about the resolution of a situation we had with a company that I thought was only in Toronto (it has an Etobicoke showroom) but is actually based in the states.

I know I said I'd do it today, but I'm going to tell you part two of our own customer service story with you tomorrow; I couldn't wait to share the contents of an email from a friend of mine who lives in Ontario and sent me this story. I know it's 100% true because Lori doesn't fudge facts. Here it is. It speaks pretty powerfully to the other side of customer service and how things can so sideways so very quickly. Lori writes:

I'd like to share with you, today and tomorrow, tales of two encounters with customer service. The first, we were amazed and very pleased with; the second, I'm still pondering.

Hope your weekend was warm and wonderful. Ours was spent up ladders, on our knees and toiling away in rubber gloves. (Here's a tip: if you have longer nails and don't want to destroy the fingertips of rubber gloves, use a cotton ball or half of a makeup remover pad shoved into the tips. Saves your nails from bumping hard surfaces; saves the glove tips. Thanks to big sister Cindy for that one!) But there's a much bigger cleaning tip coming up - one that could literally be a life saver.

I just realized that this week's journals have inadvertently had an accent on animals. First, there was the incident with the barbecue and that poor chicken. Then on Tuesday we celebrated Molly's 13th birthday. We had a guy come over to the house that day and he refused to believe that, as she bounded up to welcome him and ran around the house in excitement, she actually was that age. And honest to goodness, he asked, "What are you feeding her, anyway?" So I told him. Caru.

Rob and I are off today to Kelowna to welcome to BC the fourth and final Davis sister to the province. Leslie, my sister who has had just a terrible year, losing her oldest son in what appears to be a case of murder in that same BC city, has decided she wants to raise her children in the same province as her grandson resides. We've all banded together to help make it happen.

I need to start out by asking a favour from one journal reader and I truly hope she sees this. Marg H. from Kitchener (or her friend from Ancaster who suggested she come and read this journal) please drop me a line at erin@erindavis.com. I haven't responded to your very touching email of a few weeks ago because I cut and pasted it, sent it to my personal email and then realized I didn't have your address on it. My bad.

There's a sweet little girl in our house who is having a 13th birthday today. We're not the best pet parents, I suppose; we won't be giving her a doggie cupcake or taking her to the spa. We'll just give her extra cuddles and say thanks - as we always do - for her being in our lives.

Just two weeks and one day until October 31st. We're going to have to talk to our neighbours and find out how many children - if any - we can expect at our door and then buy treats that won't add to our body mass if we have to eat them ourselves in the weeks that follow. Eyeglass cleaners and floss picks, anyone?

To wrap up this week, a mystery is solved and yet another level of sweetness is added to a dragonfly story I shared here on Wednesday.

It turns out that, just as I thought, the dragonfly keychains hanging in Lauren's memorial tree in Gravenhurst were, indeed, left there by the woman who made them! Barbara wrote to me:

I've loved hearing from you on Facebook and in my inbox this week. Thanks for the feedback yesterday and for your own takes on the hotel blog Tuesday and the dragonfly reactions yesterday. We got an answer to our "mystery" and I'll share that with you tomorrow. But now, to today's journal.

Okay - you know that hotel story (part two) that I mentioned yesterday? I'll pick it up in tomorrow's journal. But today I have for you a much more important note as we look at the calendar with hearts filled with gratitude and fond memories.

Well, we're home. It was a full ten days, but made up of the perfect blend of family and friends, earning and spending, resting and working. Could we have fit in a few more visits? Absolutely; we're already counting down to our next visit with our grandson and his folks.

I told you last week of the amazing hour spent listening to Mrs. Trudeau, but the other bookend to the work element of this trip was the third Canadian Real Estate Association get together, this one in Kitchener.

Being back in Ontario for the past week has brought feelings of joy, longing, reflection and, yes, even a little guilt. Why guilt? 'Cause it's me, of course! Seriously, it's because there are so many people we'd love to connect with that we just simply haven't had time for. I'm sure we've hurt some feelings along the way this trip, but I hope we'll be forgiven.

A number of things strike you when you are in a room listening to Margaret Trudeau speaking.

First, it's that she's been a figure in your life for as long as you can remember. From the young Flower Power bride of a charismatic politician to the wild child partying with the Rolling Stones and dancing with abandon at Studio 54, to a woman who seemed to publicly battle demons of mental illness, lose herself to grief following the death of one of her sons and then emerge as a spokesperson for mental health.

I promised some thoughts on Mrs. Trudeau's speech last week at RPNAO in today's journal. They'll wait. For now though, another day awakening to the horror of a terrorist act. On Sunday it was Edmonton, city of my birth. Yesterday, Las Vegas, one of my favourite cities on Earth.

Once again because we are on the road, there will be no audio journal. Thanks to you and Carupetfood.com for understanding!

Welcome to a brand new week and an almost brand new month! October - when just as sure as the leaves are changing their hues, the store shelves are loaded with orange and black, just itching to turn red and green. Yikes! Here we go.
