As a Canadian, I can't think of a much more awesome (while also exasperating) experience than shopping in an American grocery store. We did this a few times while we were away, having booked a townhouse to save on money and allow us to prepare most of our own meals.

This month I got reacquainted with an old friend and it was about time. I don't know how many people plan on losing weight on vacation, but yours truly decided that, thanks to a year of writing, my ever-expanding derrière and waistline needed to be shown who's boss. So I decided to find the MyFitnessPal app on my phone and start keeping track of calories again.

Counting today, there are just three days left in November. For many, 2017 is a year that can go and take all of its awfulness with it. Mind you, it hasn't all been bad, of course, and we can always hold hope that 2018 will bring change for the better!

I know that, for many, the Christmas season truly has begun, from Santa Claus parades to full-on holiday classics on the radio (here in Victoria, we at Ocean 98.5 switch over to 100% Christmas this Friday, December 1st).

Hi! It's great to be back with you and I hope that you had a good weekend, snowy Grey Cup and all. No matter how wonderful a getaway - and we had a really fun but restful time visiting the US southwest - it's always good to get home. We picked up Molly from her own vacation up island at a new friend's home, and she was excited to see us, but we're positive she was well-loved and taken care of, as you can see in this picture of her making herself perfectly at home after a windy, rainy walk with Lou last week.

Two months. That's how much time is left until my book is supposed to be submitted to HarperCollins and we start the editing process in 2018. It's due out - book gods willing - in spring of 2019...may we all live so long!

Do you ever wonder what happens in the pointy end of the plane? Well, it's kind of a little too far down the road to ask my dad, who flew 707s and L-1011s and many more planes. But I'll tell you, I got a glimpse last week as I was in the security lineup to head to Toronto.

I have a Nexus card, which is one of the best purchases I've ever made. Because I've been pre-screened by the US and Canadian governments, it usually means shorter lineups and fewer hassles. Well, nothing could have been further from the truth last week.

I said it last month and I'll say it again: going back to Toronto feels almost alarmingly like home! From a hug onstage from listener Lianne at the Canada Awards for Excellence Thursday to another hug from Amal in the Air Canada lounge as I headed home that night (after de-icing) sometimes it feels like TO is where I am meant to be. And then off I go....

What an unusual statutory holiday this is! Forgive me if you are one, but I don't quite understand why federal government employees are given this day off because Remembrance Day fell on a Saturday this year. Nope, sorry, just don't get it. What are workers to do - go to the cenotaph again?

Ah, Friday. There's so much to be thankful for. So why is everybody so outraged about, well, everything? I mean, I'm not outraged...but honestly, it gets a little exhausting. I wanted to share with you some thoughts from a journal a few years back. I feel as strongly about it today as I did then, or maybe even more so. There's a lot of hate being needlessly stirred up these days.

So, have you ever gotten pillowcases handed out at Halloween? How about under the tree at Christmas? Well, would you like some? I'm kidding, but it could well come to this. (I'll learn which of my siblings reads this journal when, come Christmas, they ask, "So where are my pillow cases...?") Let me explain.

Well, here I go from YYJ to YYZ again today, but this time it's just me, as Rob will stay behind and enjoy the peace and quiet and leftovers from a turkey we made on Sunday!

Every day, you hear about what "National Day" this is. It's really a load of hooey; someone in Georgia, for example, petitioned his or her representative in Congress and got them to declare August 24th "National Peach Pie Day." Well, that's just terrific. Why do we in Canada observe the same days? A lot of reasons, most of them having to do with media - social and otherwise. And besides, what's the harm, right? Because right now I have you thinking about peach pie!

I hope you're feeling extra well-rested this morning after one bonus hour of sleep on Sunday morning. We had quite a rude awakening ourselves here on the west coast....

Two days a year. It happens two days a year: snowfall in the amount of five centimetres (two inches) or more. And boy, did we get hit! On Thursday night and into Friday morning, some seven centimetres of snow was measured at Victoria International Airport, which is just about a stone's throw from our house. This is a shot of our bird feeder with the airport in the distance.

File this under "you learn something new every day": fireworks on Halloween are a thing in BC! In fact, we were stunned when, at 8 pm sharp, we could see out our windows down towards Sidney on the peninsula, and even in our own neighbourhood, displays of pyrotechnics the likes of which we'd last seen on Canada Day. While we puzzled out the significance of fireworks on Halloween, I put two and two together and actually came up with the right answer!

You've heard me talk about - and even to - my friend Lisa Brandt here. A few weeks ago, I shared with you one of her columns in Our London newspaper. Today, I wanted to piggyback on one of her topics (as well as link to it here) as good friends do - in hopes it'll make you think. It's called "The Sour Life of the Cynic."

Welcome to November - and don't forget clocks go back this Saturday night before you head to bed. Batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors also should be changed, if that's applicable. All part of being a grown-up, right?

I had a bit of a spring in my step yesterday that had to do with the silliest thing: what the memes call "adulting" (as in "adulting is hard" which is not untrue). After we'd rolled down our sleeves and left our doctor's office, I said to Rob, "Nothing makes me feel quite as grown up as asking for a flu shot."
