December 2017

December 15, 2017

I've strugged with what to write for today's journal, as it's a day that stands out so brightly in our lives, Rob's and mine: the last show from Casa Loma was a year ago today. It was on a Thursday, and then Friday the moving truck came to clear out what we were taking with us from the condo. That night, Rob, Molly and I took a car to the airport and Saturday, our new life in BC began.

This day is one that I might not have remembered as kind of a "red letter" one, had a lovely person not reminded me on Twitter yesterday. But indeed, 52 weeks ago today was my final morning with CHFI, which makes today's journal, and its full circle feeling, especially fitting.

I thought this might be a timely journal for you, given that so many of the readers and listeners who come by here to share a few minutes each day are based in my old stomping grounds, which are covered in at least ten centimetres of snow. Here goes something to warm you up a bit: a nice wood fire.

I'm so glad you clicked on audio yesterday and heard Rob's handiwork on a special poem about Christmas cards. Thanks for your kind feedback both in emails and Facebook.

At the end of yesterday's journal, I promised to tell you about a gift I'd received from someone I hadn't met. And then, strangely enough, a second gift came from another friend I've not met, a journal reader and listener. How lucky I am!

Just two weeks until Christmas now and, of course, one more sleep until Hannukah. Are you sending out cards this year? I'll be mailing a few, which will be more than we did last year when we were in the midst of a move, but not as many as I'll likely send out next year when I have a little less on my plate.

First off, I want to congratulate my friends at CHFI on a tremendous fall ratings book. They were up several share points and find themselves sitting pretty at #1 in the key demographics, with huge gains across the board. I am so happy for everyone there who has worked so hard for so long to make this happen and am only glad I could get out of the way to help this dream to become a reality once again!

Sidney, BC

This little town, nestled next to the ocean and just as pretty as you can get, lives up to the promises on its sign. Thankfully, Sidney is also a spot where they embrace the beauty of their surroundings to lure visitors for weekly summer night markets, which we took in a few times, and for frequent celebrations to bring shoppers to its lively downtown area.

7000 steps. That's roughly the length of the Sidney Sparkles Santa Claus Parade route and I can tell you that because my FitBit kept track for me. Now, mind you, I could have ridden in our station SUV if I'd wanted to, but I wouldn't have missed this for anything.

Three weeks. Three weeks until Boxing Day. Who counts down to Boxing Day? Only the hardiest of shoppers and somebody who doesn't know if she can make it through another holiday season. As if there's a choice, right? We do it. You try to close out the songs that hold the heaviest emotional heft, you stay away from boxes of ornaments and lights that may not ever be opened and you fantasize about running away again and just hiding from the whole thing.

I hope you had a lovely weekend because, oh, did we ever! Despite hacking and sniffling through the first cold he's had in a year, Rob was by my side as we immersed ourselves in the lights, the love and the spirit of this season here in and around Sidney and Victoria, BC.

Well, here it is: December. And just as if a giant advent calendar has dropped on our heads, Rob and I are leaping into the Christmas season in a huge way today, tomorrow and Sunday. What they really mean, these events, are just ways we're further dipping our toes into the community and life around our new home. After all, this month marks a year since we left Toronto and moved to Vancouver Island.
