February 2018

February 28, 2018

Well, here it is - last day of February. Spring is next month, spring training is already almost a week old and we have all turned a collective corner towards longer days, warmer temperatures and (hopefully) sunnier skies.

Now that I'm done my nine-month stay with Ocean 98.5 here in Victoria, I am so happy to say that an experience Rob and I shared has turned into something that Ocean has been able to use as something special for listeners. Let me explain.

Well, here we go again - another grateful goodbye to radio, but this time with a little more peace in my heart. You see, this was a gift that just happened to come when I needed it most. As I've often said, radio has saved me more times than I can count. And today I close another chapter.

Ever since humans began putting thoughts down in words, whether carved in stone, scratched onto papyrus or even swabbed onto cave walls, adults have lamented the future in the hands of the so-called "younger generation." I don't know if there could possibly be more proof that those concerns are unfounded than the events of the last two weeks in Florida and in Korea.

Well, there was a surprise after all! First off, thank you for your kind notes both on Facebook and to my email (which is erin@erindavis.com if you're not on FB and wish to be in touch any time) wishing us a happy 30th anniversary yesterday. As promised, it was a low key one, but we did do something that I totally did not expect going into the day.

If you have the time, why not go to the audio journal today? Rob's playing DJ for me...you'll get it....

I hope that, if you celebrated it, you had a lovely Family Day weekend. We marked the day here last week at my Aunt and Uncle's and it was an evening of good food and laughter. Can't ask for much more than that, can we?

We’ve noticed a few funny things while driving out here in BC - and I’m not just talking about the proliferation of VW vans here, or the right hand drive vans that seem to be everywhere. No, this is about a rule that puzzled us...and something else.

First, we were surprised when we bought our used Mini back in the summertime that it didn’t need to pass any kind of mechanical fitness inspection. None. This is a requirement in Ontario, of course, and I think it makes perfect sense.

Happy Valentine's Day. And I guess it's really appropriate that on this day that's all about love, I get to tell you of something that combines my loves: travel, Rob and my favourite radio partner.

Hey - first of all, thanks if you were one of many who posted on my public FB page about the fact that BC is going to align its Family Day with the rest of the country next year. I don't know where I was when that news came out, but I will be sure to mention it on my midday radio show today here in Victoria. And speaking of radio....

Happy Monday! For reasons that are entirely beyond me, British Columbia marks Family Day today. Of course, since it's not observed nationally either today or next Monday, when most of the rest of the country takes the day off, it means that federal workers will show up at work - doesn't it? I'm sure that makes for a cheery day at the office.

Happy Friday! Of course, everyone's thoughts are with the Canadians competing under our beautiful maple leaf in Korea. In case you'll be waiting out the night time broadcasts, may I suggest a movie? It's three weeks now until the Oscars and I thought I'd visit the topic of films again, in the event you were thinking of going to see a movie this weekend.

I've been thinking a lot about a poor, very rich woman in New Hampshire. And, as always, I try to put myself in her shoes, which could be handmade by Christian Louboutin himself from now on, if she so chooses. In case you haven't heard this woman's story, here it is in a nutshell: Jane Doe (not her real name) won $560 million US in the recent giant Powerball lottery.

It used to be that if you wanted a clear path to a big movie award nomination, you should try to find a role in which you played a prostitute. "Play a Hooker, Win an Oscar," as the New York Times put it back in the 1990s. For a while there, playing a nun would also be a very good career move. But now? Find yourself a really messed up mother role. Or at least, that's the case this year.

Nothing like thoughts of baseball to brighten a February day and Rob and I have been hoping to fit in a Jays game when we visit Ontario in April. We might just be able to sit in the friendly confines of the Rogers Centre and watch our favourite team in the early days of a (hopefully) promising new season. But one player we won't be seeing this year in a Jays uniform is veteran infielder Darwin Barney, who has been signed to a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers. The news came down yesterday.

Another week, another earthquake out our way it seems - and it wasn't caused by Don Cherry's suit Saturday night (or his ridiculousness equating weather with climate on Coach's Cuckaloo Corner). A 3.2 magnitude (intially reported to be 2.8, but later upgraded) quake hit a place called Friday Harbor, which is just as idyllic and sweet as its name implies (although it does sound a bit like a saloon) just before 11 on Saturday night.

Welcome to Friday - and Groundhog Day at that. I'll try not to repeat myself. And I'll also try not to repeat myself. By the way, some cities have the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day in theatres this weekend. Check it out if you're looking for anything to watch this Sunday besides football. Of course, there IS the Puppy Bowl, with half-time kittens (which is also a great band name).

Welcome to a brand new month. Tomorrow, I have a kind of spine-tingling story of a couple of dates that coincide this weekend that I think you'll appreciate. I'm off to see another movie today, so next week we'll talk I, Tonya and Lady Bird. Lots to share with you. My must-see recommendation for this weekend is still Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Powerful, filled with redemption and empathy. Surprises at every turn. Everything a Best Picture ought to be.
