March 2018

March 29, 2018

Here we are on the edge of the Easter weekend. It's a holiday signifying a rebirth, a time of hope and renewal, a period when we're reminded that life goes on and even begins again. I'd like to share with you a story that brought that home to me once again this week.

I'm in a small boat now and I'm ready to rant.

If I could wave a magic wand, I'd do a lot of things. (Hmm - maybe I should've written this as a poem....) But somewhere on that list - probably way down - would be finding a way for companies to share their resources with other parts of the same body. I have a couple of good examples and, since this is my area of a lifetime of knowledge, I'll focus on radio.

Sitting here on a rainy, foggy, socked-in kind of day, you'll forgive me for wanting the calendar to speed up a bit to get us to next April when Mike, Debbie, Rob and I will be your hosts and companions for a European river cruise. The single staterooms have all been booked, which is great news, and there are still some double staterooms available.

I don't know if it's my optimistic streak, but I'm always looking down. Not metaphorically, but literally: I am expecting to see a dime, a loonie or something to surprise me in my path, and sometimes I actually do.

But there's something I've seen with alarming regularity and I'm wondering if you've noticed a lot of these too:

There is something amazing happening tomorrow in the United States and a total of at least 844 communities around the world (including Victoria and Toronto, to name just two in Canada) as kids and families of March for our Lives "take to the streets to demand that their lives and safety become a priority, and that we end gun violence in our schools and communities."

I have saved one of my favourite travel - or life - stories EVER for today's journal. I hope that you get a chance to listen to it, as I'm straining to put into words here what excitement and awe this chance encounter brought to Rob and to me. So give it a click.

Today Twitter is 12 years old. I'm still amazed at the number of people who aren't on this social media platform, although I don't blame or judge (why would I?). What I don't understand is people who kind of sneer and say "I don't use Twitter" (or, more often, "I don't Twit" or something vaguely off) when they don't know what they're missing.

Well, spring has just about sprung. It happens at 12:15 pm EDT and I know that if you are one of the people who read this journal from an Ontario postal code, you cannot wait. We have watched the weather from here on the west coast and just shuddered at how relentless it was for so very long this winter. We couldn't be happier on everyone's behalf that the vernal equinox is upon us.

Welcome back to the journal. As you may know, Rob and I took a week away from this page to do a little traveling, have some fun and speed up March so that we can get to April a little faster and see our sweet grandbaby in Ottawa. Nothing like a few days away to do just that!

Titled Tulip Time, it's 7 nights through the Netherlands and Belgium on board the AMAKristina.

We leave in April of next year and would love for you to join us. You can find the info below and inquire about pricing from Gerry Koolhof at New Wave Travel.

Well, here we are - Friday already. It's been a busy week, but nothing I've done in the past little while has been as gratifying as putting on my "performer" hat again and moderating a Q&A for a club which I joined last fall. And it happened during, appropriately, International Women's Day. How perfect!

Hey there - I hope your week is going well. I want to finish off my eyebrow blog from yesterday. I have the "after" pictures and stories for you from the microblading session that I booked almost four weeks ago. Tomorrow, I go back to Elham's Cottage (a studio added on to her house in picturesque View Royal, near Victoria) for my touch-up session and I'm not quite sure what that entails, but I am looking forward to it just the same.

Hey - before we go any further - here's an invitation to log on and join us for a webinar - just an online chat, to talk about the Tulip Time Cruise that Mike and I are hosting next April on AMA Waterways through The Netherlands and Belgium. The link to register is here. I've never been a part of one of these; I've logged on to passively observe and even write questions as it goes, but not actually as an active participant. So here's to another learning experience!

What a journey Rob and I have been on the past few days! Not just our little Oscar party where we and our three guests donned tuxes and/or fancy fake jewels as we sipped sparkling wine or water and watched all of our favourites take home the coveted Academy Award...but we've been seeing some "moving pictures" of our own.

Welcome to a brand new week. I hope that you're not too sleep-deprived (that is, if you stayed up for the Oscars last night). Of course, here on the west coast, everything began at 5 pm. Where were these hours when I was getting up at 3:15 on Mondays? Honestly! But we had over a couple and another friend and we dressed up just for fun - Rob in his tux and everything - and I'll get to that tomorrow, if it's worthwhile. But for today...another kitchen adventure.

Welcome to Friday and, for many of us, it's an exciting weekend because the Oscars telecast is this Sunday. Over the past year, we've come to love Jimmy Kimmel and look forward to him returning as host. This year we've really leaned into the Best Picture race, having seen all but one of the nominees. Nine out of ten! (The one standout, Call Me By Your Name, had come and gone from Victoria by the time we got around to seeing it. So we'll catch it at home on demand.)

Welcome (and hello March). I forgot to tell you something Monday which you may have seen if you pop by our Facebook page: just as the radio show here in Victoria was ending, I awoke on Friday morning to news from Rob that I'd gotten a voice job. Like so many others, I audition for hundreds and get maybe five or six a month. Nothing I could live on, that's for sure! But this one is as the voice of a crow in a video game(!) and we did it by Skype on Monday with a producer in Denmark. What a world!
