April 2018

April 30, 2018

Here we are, final day of April. The last few days have been filled with a familiar bit of dread in our house, as Rob has had the dining room table covered with bits and pieces of paper. Yes, the tax deadline is here.

Oh, I've missed being in Toronto this week. I've missed being with you, feeling connected, listening to your thoughts and hearing your grief and stories of hope. I've missed seeing for myself in real time the outpouring of kindness and commemoration, of steely determination and softened sadness. Yes, of course, I'm online (probably too much) and can watch Toronto television from out here on the west coast. But it's not the same. I am there with you, though.

Like you, I have a lot to try to sort through as we learn more about the motive and the madness that went into Monday's devastation and horror. While we all try to do that, I'll share with you a journal I had prepared to run yesterday. Like so much of the conversation surrounding Toronto's horror, it is a reminder of connection and of the things that matter most in this life: love and kindness. E.

Ever since that perfect late summer day of 2001 was shattered by a spate of evil like North America had never seen before, I have wondered. I wondered how Toronto would fare in the aftermath of an attack - domestic or foreign, terrorist or otherwise - and what we, whose job it was to talk with those who suffered in fear and sadness, would say.

I'll call today's journal the Great Canadian Guilt Trip. And I think I might have been on it the past month or so. Here's what I mean: I realize, thanks to stats from my journal website that deal with times that it is read and listened to, that a majority of the people who come here every week are visiting from the eastern time zones.

Well, I think we're finally back on BC time. This is one big beautiful country, but these time zones are a killer. I'm already thinking that when we fly out to Amsterdam next April for the Tulip Time AMA river cruise with the Coopers, we'll do our visiting in Ontario - especially Ottawa - first. Just let the body clock adjust a bit so I'm not facedown in the soup for the first day or two!

Welcome. I promised you the story of a real surprise that happened during this trip. It was Sunday. I was pleased to be hosting the annual leadership summit for the Canadian Real Estate Association, held in Ottawa at the Westin Hotel downtown. It's a gathering that, spread over a few days, helps realtors form policies and band together to take on challenges that face them from government, competition and the ever-changing world of the 21st century.

Well, that certainly did not go as expected. Oh, I'm not talking about our sweet family time plus visits and business in Toronto, London and Ottawa (although there was something amazingly unexpected that happened work-wise on Sunday that I'll fill you in on here tomorrow). I'm referring to our travels on Monday evening.

Welcome in! If you're reading this, we're home, back in our cozy bed in North Saanich, just up the highway from Victoria and shouting distance from the International Airport. We arrived in late last night, did a bit of recording and then headed to bed.

Where did it go? Almost two weeks have flown by and here we are, getting set to turn in our rental car here in Ottawa and head home. It's not a direct flight to Victoria (there isn't one) but WestJet will have us connecting in Calgary this evening before we hopefully land just before midnight at YYJ.

Friday already! Monday, we'll be on a plane heading home, but not before lots more Coco time (he's home from school today) and a special national event being held here in Ottawa that I'm hosting for the Canadian Real Estate Association on Sunday. What a wonderful collaboration this has been over the past year, me and CREA, and I can only hope that the rest of this year, and maybe even years to come, bring more of these sorts of partnerships.

I'm writing this as we make our way towards Ottawa; grey skies and temperatures in the low single digits make us wonder - as I'm sure that you do - whether spring, now in its third official week, is ever going to make an entrance. Familiar voices on our car radio warn of possible freezing rain this weekend (so the DVP spring clean-up closure is cancelled) and we shake our heads. Just let us spend time with our dear boy Colin and his parents. That's all we ask of the gods these days!

Thank you for sharing with us these two weeks here in Ontario. I have to tell you that I am awash in a mixture of emotions, but not one of them is regret about the decision we made to leave. It's not you; it's us. We have met up with so many friends since we got here last week and every one of them has reminded us of the heart connections that we made along the way. But without Lauren here, this can never truly be home again.

Today I salute a man who has traveled to every remote corner of this expansive, impressive land of ours, as he gets set to wave good-bye, at least for now. Although, for Rob and me, our travels have brought us this week back to beautiful Ontario - relentless winter and all - these past few days spent on highways and back roads, I've been thinking more about the province of Saskatchewan than I think I ever have.

Hello again - I trust you were able to stay warm and cozy this weekend. We were fully immersed in winter weather on our drive from downtown Toronto to London, where friends Lisa and Derek welcomed us and we caught up with our dear pals while getting our bodies back on eastern time.

Hello again - I trust you were able to stay warm and cozy this weekend. We were fully immersed in winter weather on our drive from downtown Toronto to London on Friday, where friends Lisa and Derek welcomed us and we caught up with our dear pals while getting our bodies back on eastern time. Of course, like nearly all Canadians, our hearts were and are heavy with sadness for the victims and families of the horrible bus/truck crash in Saskatchewan. So many lives changed forever in a flash - so much sadness; a thread of sorrow binding this great wide land together this week.

This week, many of us met a man we'd never heard of (in fact, I can only hope I'm saying his first name right in my audio journal) but who has already become a hero to me.

Well, we're back in Ontario I'd almost forgotten how cold April can get. Almost. We may have left our shovels here when we moved in late 2016, but at least I still have a good warm coat! The winds when we landed at Pearson were gusting up around 90 kilometres an hour. I could barely park my broom!

Hi there. Off we go to Victoria's sweet, light-filled airport: today (as of 5 am - ugh - did I ever really get up this early, or earlier?) we fly to Toronto to begin nearly two weeks of meetings, socializing, combinations of the two and, yes, even some work! As luck would have it, I was hired to emcee a day of events for the Canadian Real Estate Association in Ottawa next Sunday. And so our travels will take us there, which just happens to be where a certain three-and-a-half year old boy is living with his folks. We cannot wait!

I hope you had a wonderful long weekend, that the Easter Bunny was good to you (or stayed away, if that's what you were hoping for) and that the spirit of renewal and hope is in your heart.
