Part of the reason we were on the mainland last week was to help my sister Cindy in Summerland, BC as she prepares for a huge garage/yard/driveway sale this weekend. But it was ads for larger ticket items, like a piano, on sites like Kijiji and Used Kelowna that made me aware of a scam so sophisticated that it took an online search to figure out just what the crooks' game is. Here's how it works.
Cindy gets an email or text that looks like this - awful grammar and all:

Well, after the drama of the last two days' journals, I thought today I'd share with you an actual scripted comedy that we took in last week. And do you know what? I did something I don't think I have ever done since getting into radio thirty-some years ago: I saw a film without reading one single review beforehand.

Let's catch you up on yesterday's journal: I had just been announced to the stage at the Monteo Resort in gorgeous Kelowna BC. I was delivering my keynote address called "Transformation: When You're Strong Because You Have No Choice" to a freshly caffeinated group of BC Broadcasters - radio and television.

I hope you've had a good weekend and thank you for coming back after our short hiatus from this journal. I had a lot of things to do from a writing perspective (including hitting a book deadline this coming Wednesday) and I just decided to reorganize my head a little bit. So, thank you for understanding.
We're home safe and sound after our Washington/BC road trip and it ended much more uneventfully than the one day in the middle of it, around which we'd planned the entire trip to begin with!

First of all, I want to wish you a very happy Victoria Day Weekend and a welcome to the unofficial kickoff of summer! Here in the Okanagan, where it's been in the upper 20s and low 30s, we've already had more than our share, so, fill your boots!

Sometimes you make it into your forties, fifties, sixties, even beyond, and you see something that makes you wonder: now, why the heck didn't I think of that? I'm not talking the internet or virtual currency or even a pop machine that gives you about a hundred different drink choices with the push of a button. No, what I mean is much simpler. So obvious that you wonder how on earth it never occurred to you. In a moment, I'll share a few examples with you.

For some folks, there's no place like home. Mike Cooper, my former radio partner, says that even as a kid, he'd be on vacation with his folks and the moment they arrived he wanted to know "when are we going home?" Not me. I love hotels, motels, the adventure of booking them and, of course, checking reviews (and having my say as roberin on Trip Advisor).

I hope this day finds you in good spirits. Come on along as we continue our road trip, won't you?

Welcome to a brand new week and let me start by saying I hope that you had a lovely Mother's Day. If you were without a child or children, I was thinking of you; not for a moment in my writing last week did I forget that there are so many others who walk this path with me as a bereaved mom.

Three years.
Three years ago today was our daughter's last day on this earth and it's one for which we will forever be grateful: a day spent celebrating her first Mother's Day with her sweet little son and her kind and loving husband.
Of course, so very much has changed since that day and, as I stressed in yesterday's journal, our challenge - our life's work now - is to find the positive in every day that we are given. This week, our tiny part of the universe helped to make that task just a little easier. Such beautiful timing!

I'm going to call today's journal Wednesday Wisdom, although truthfully these words - not mine, mind you - are Monday Motivation, Tuesday Truth, Saturday Sanity - you name it.
They come from the Dalai Lama. And although these words hit home when I first read them Monday, they hit even harder yesterday. I'd just come out of the studio after recording two-plus hours for a series of children's books. To say it went well was an understatement and I am just so excited about this project.

We're learning a new language these days, you and I, and I wonder if you've noticed it in the way you type your communications with people of another generation. We sure have.
Let me try something out on you. Someone says, "Sorry, I made a mistake in that last email. I've corrected it and you should be okay to go ahead now with no more problems."
You reply, "Thanks a lot."

Here we go: the week that has our daughter's death date on Friday and then Mother's Day on Sunday. To say that May carries with it an extra heaviness is an understatement, but we will, to quote a song title from our favourite Beatles album (Abbey Road), "Carry That Weight."

Ah, yes, Star Wars Day. "May the Fourth Be With You," and all of that. I confess to having fallen into that little hammock of wordplay: March 10 is "Mario Day" (MAR10)...July 10th is "Julio Day" and so on. I just like dates and numbers and silliness like that. I always said, too, that March Fourth was the only day of the year to tell you what to do, although, to be fair, March First might well have fit that narrative, too. The point is, I'm a word geek.

"Go make money talking!" Those were the last four words as my sister and I hung up the other night; she was heading to bed to get ready for an early morning seminar at her retail job and I had just been summoned to my booth by Rob to please come and do an audition. That's the thing with freelance work: you leap when the opportunity arises, to be one of the first hopefuls in on a job. And maybe - just maybe - you'll be the one to get it, out of the 200 who tried.

I started this journal no fewer than three times today and ended up saving the other two ideas - several paragraphs' worth - for journals down the road. May can leave me looking inwards an awful lot, so I'll be happy to have a few in my back pocket to share with you that don't have to do with love, loss, Lauren and Mother's Day. To the saved file they go!

You have heard of the Six Degrees of Separation that we all have among us - or even from Kevin Bacon - but on Friday night we learned that one man linked Rob and our dinner guest, and had changed both of their lives for the better. You probably won't be surprised to learn it was a teacher.
