I'm having a little bit of a moral dilemma, but it's one I'm going to have to deal with at another time. You see, for now, we have travel plans booked and paid for, and once again, they take us to the US.

No, I haven't become a spokesperson for a car dealership again! Rob and I have a new resident in the garage, although saying goodbye to the car she replaced was not easy! You may recall last year at almost exactly this time, we found a MINI convertible online and bought it the same day. Gently used despite her age (2005) and mileage (now just over 100k), we loved this little periwinkle blue convertible and seized every day there was to put the top down and let the wind wreck our hair.

Well, with so many people talking about and anticipating vacations over the next few months, this couldn't be more timely. Today's journal will let you do a little dreaming. Our good friend and travel guru Gerry Koolhof at New Wave Travel contacted us a couple of weeks ago to tell us about a gathering tomorrow night in Yorkville that I think you might want to know about, even if you are still just dreaming at this point.

A few times a year I'll share with you scams that are going around. Either they're proliferating and making the news or - as in the case of the PayPal rip-off that was aimed at my sister (and later my aunt who's selling a car online) - they've hit close to home. Forewarned is forearmed and all of that, right? Well, who would have thought that Rob and I would fall for one too? But here's our story.
About a month ago, I got an email through this website. It's easy to find me: the link is right there at the top of this page. Here's what this email from a Bill Shreefer said:

Here we are, nearing the end of another school year. I remember so clearly how deliriously wonderful these last days felt, especially in elementary school when parties were held, projects were taken home and the whole delicious summer stretched out ahead.

By the time you read this, summer will probably have begun, having arrived at 3:07 am Pacific time. Of course, that's the astronomical start of summer; for so many parts of the world, it's considered to be June, July and August. Whatever - Happy Summer!

Thank you for your kind notes and posts about Miss Molly yesterday. We're really at peace with everything and we wanted you to know that. She seems to be in pretty good shape (especially for a pup going on 14 years old) and we hope she's going to be around for a good long while - just as long as she enjoys her life. That's all we want.

In the life of every pet parent, there come dark days. Our last sad day was in the summer of 2015 just a few months after we'd lost Lauren. Pepper's condition deteriorated due to age and, at 17-and-a-half, we had to take him on his last car ride to the vet. He was such a good dog and we knew that when his life was no longer fun for him, it was time to let him go.

We're taking a couple of weeks off the audio journal portion of this website. Rob and I are on the road for a bit of a breather, so I'm giving him a break from producing them.
I hope you had a lovely Father's Day. It's not something we mark in our home - at Rob's request - but, of course, I remind him often of how great a dad he was. And he knows it.

This Sunday is Father's Day - but, of course, you knew that! And we hope that if your dad is still with you, you get a chance to tell him what he means to you. This week, we get two chances.

One of things I love about this modern age in which we live (okay, and it's also one of the things I hate) is the way in which ideas can be exchanged so easily. Yes, there are plenty of people who will post absolute garbage disguised as truth (some of them bots, of course) but sometimes, if your mind is open instead of your mouth, you can learn something, too. That was the case with me this past week.

First of all, let me thank you for your kind words to my email, on Facebook and on Twitter yesterday. I can tell you that our Ottawa family was as touched by the public outpouring of support and kindness as we were.
Of course, you and I have been together, for the most part, for such a long time now and goodness knows you've seen us through a lot of highs and lows. The deepest lows. The highest highs - including a wedding five years ago this month - and every possible thing in between. And here we are celebrating yet another truly happy moment. So, thank you for that.

How lovely it is to start this Tuesday with such wonderful news! Our little family is expanding.
No, I'm not pregnant (although I do have a friend who conceived at our age and it has crossed my mind...hmmm...) but we are soon officially adding a daughter to our lives. Or daughter-in-law? I just don't know what the title is for someone who is marrying your widowed son-in-law! But instead, I'll call her Brooke (since that's her name) and say how absolutely delighted we are that Phil proposed to her and she said "yes".

was going to share with you here today some stories about my dad. Today he turns 85 years old and my sisters gathered with him yesterday in Kelowna to help him celebrate. But I'm waiting until he comes to the island and we'll have our own party with his brother, my uncle and friend Vern. Right DAD???
Instead, I'll tell you some Dad stories on Friday, when we get set for Father's Day. Today, I want to talk about all of those who don't make it to 85. Or 65. Or 45.

Ocean's 8

Happy Friday! I told you that today's journal would be a diversion from the angst of the latest Ontario election season, and I'm keeping that promise. I can't lie: I gasped when I checked the news on my phone after seeing Ocean's 8. But it didn't affect my thoughts on it, and my main criterion: would I recommend it to you? So, here we go.

Here it is, June 7th: a day that is sure to usher in big change in my old stomping grounds of Ontario, just as we've seen here in BC since we arrived. (I've no doubt the same people who blamed us for bringing snow also wondered if we didn't pack with us the whole coalition government idea, too.)

I told you here yesterday of my shower "A-ha" moment (and it had nothing to do with getting minty shampoo where it shouldn't go, although that's happened). Last week as I was going through the one of the final edits of my book, taking care of legal requests that I get permission to mention this or that, I was ready just to delete a part of the book that meant a lot to me. In her “Homage to Age and Femininity,” published in O magazine, American novelist Anne Lamott summed up our lives and our future beautifully:

I hope you had a great weekend! Something happened here that serves to remind me - and hopefully you - of the goodness in people and the power of just asking. Sometimes the answer is "no" but you have to believe that they will be outweighed by affirmative replies.

Today marks the beginning of a month, but also the end of a longtime relationship between morning TV viewers and their favourite host. I'd like to tell you a little bit about my experience with Kevin Frankish, who today is doing his last Breakfast Television show with Dina, Frank, Winston and the morning show family at City in Toronto.
