Thursday thoughts today include a mix of melancholy and anticipation. We're just about to begin a new school year and, with that in mind, whatever your stage in life, whether the parent of a child or simply an adult remembering your years as one, you can surely identify with the massive nerves, the dread and, yes, anticipation and excitement. And the tears...ours, theirs; parents' and children's.

In a world of instant information, how are we supposed to avoid spoilers? A couple of cases that I thought you might find interesting.

I'm going to share with you a blog that my dear friend Lisa posted yesterday at her site When I read the first few lines, I thought she and I had written the same thoughts on the same day; the theme of mine yesterday was "use the good dishes."

Just when you hoped a weekend might clear your mind from awful news.... John McCain passes away. A mass shooting at a gaming tournament in Florida. A great American playwright, Neil Simon, steps off life's stage at 91. One was expected, the second, another gun-related tragedy and the third, the end of a full and fruitful life.
The randomness of life itself drives home the reason behind something I've started doing since dismantling our comfortable existence in Ontario and inventing a new one here on beautiful Vancouver Island: use the good dishes!

Well, I was thinking of wrapping up the week, as I have the past few, with a recipe, but the little voice in my head asks, is that what people come here for? So I'll listen to that voice and just post a link to the most fantastic summery salad - three ingredients and a super easy dressing - that I had great success with this week. If asparagus, tomatoes and avocados sound good to you (in a light Dijon/olive oil dressing) - this is your go-to! The link is below.

As someone who hasn't been the parent of a toddler for more years than I care to count, being around little people reminds me of just how exhausting raising them can be. I'll give you an example: the sound machine. Not Miami Sound Machine, a child's precious sound machine, like this....

After an incredible 12+ hours of news, let's switch lanes to the highly entertaining and blessedly diverting summer movie offering.
A few years back, I was asked if I'd read Kevin Kwan's best selling book Crazy Rich Asians. First off, I was taken aback by what seemed to me to be the questionable taste or inherent racism of the title. Yes, I'm super careful about stuff like that after a lifetime of having a platform on which I could make a mistake, very easily and very publicly.

I have some lovely news to share with you and I know that, given the post I put here a few months back, it won't come as a giant surprise: Phil and Brooke have gotten married! (Here's the picture I posted when they announced their engagement).

Welcome in! Thanks for all of the great comments on that salad blog on Friday. I'm making it again tomorrow for a couple from our Rotary chapter who are coming over. At least I've had practice!
Hope you had a terrific weekend - our smoke had cleared here from where we overlook the Haro Strait and a few US islands, and we were grateful to have our views back. But the smoke returned yesterday, so here we are again. The new normal here for BC summers, it seems. Kind of like flooding in downtown Toronto, too.

Before we get to today's journal...
August 16th: a date on which both the Queen of Soul and the King of Rock 'n' Roll left this world. There have been millions of words written about Aretha Franklin, who passed yesterday of pancreatic cancer at age 76, and all I will add to them is this: in an age of female singers who equate volume with power or passion, her voice rose above them all. She used her glorious gift to raise us up, to make us feel and to marvel at the sheer perfection of her instrument and talent.

Well, this was supposed to be a great family day! But, to paraphrase the old standard, Smoke Gets in Your Skies.
At long last, I'd persuaded my dad to come for a visit here on Vancouver Island. (It's not that he dislikes travel, or us, for that matter; he is just busy with his gal pal and his activities!) A short direct flight from Kelowna and Dad and his lady were to arrive here today. But - and here's where some uncharacteristic procrastination comes in handy - we all called off Dad's trip on Monday night. The reason: air quality.

I need to vent about nature and one animal in particular: the common domestic cat.
Now, before anyone gets their fur up, Rob and I have had the good fortune to share our home through the years with many cats: Toonces (named for the Driving Cat on Saturday Night Live), Billy, Kitty and George among them. When I was growing up, our sweet grey cat's name was Pookie. Of these pets - every one of them a rescue - only one was an outdoor cat.

I'll be honest with you: despite the great adventures and some lovely sights, this coastal drive was not what we had expected. Our trip down the coast from San Francisco through Santa Barbara and almost to San Diego six years ago provided more scenic views; this one up through California, into Oregon and eventually Washington State was more shrouded in fog that we would have liked.

I hope you had a restful weekend. Ours was spent relaxing Saturday and then out cooking and selling hot dogs and burgers on behalf of the Rotary Club of Sidney at a local summer fair. Big fun with great people. I'm so glad to be involved with Rotary in our new home!
Back on the road we go in today's journal and I want to take a second to say if you were away last week and missed our travels, please feel free to go back and enjoy the pictures and stories. It's a pleasure and joy to share them with you and we're honoured you want to come along.

Hi there! Happy Friday and, before I get to our travels, I wanted to remind you that you don't even have to leave your own balcony or backyard to see one of the biggest shows of the year.

San Francisco

San Francisco is a city so steeped in character that it's almost impossible to capture it here. But we'll give it a shot! And yes, I went there without flowers in my hair but found a doorway that worked just fine!

Before I get to today's journal, as I lie in bed here in Oregon trying to sort through pictures to share with you, researching things about our trip so that I can pass on facts instead of just thoughts, I am reflecting on the heavy rains that hit so many parts of my former "hometown" last night. I am hoping you were spared the ravages of such a torrential downpour yesterday and if not, that you have the help you need to recover.
Today's journal is about a place surrounded by water, by design: Alcatraz.

Greetings from the road! Since last we were together, we've done and seen so much - it's almost impossible to chronicle it all. So I'll try to keep it to the things you might find most interesting, and we'll go from there!
10 days from now, Jeff Lynne's ELO (Electric Light Orchestra for anyone who wasn't around in the 70s for their days of mega-hits) will be playing in Toronto. I hope that if you're a fan, you got tickets, because it was an amazing show. And it's ELO's first North American tour in 0ver 30 years.

Hey there - welcome to the Friday of this sweet August long weekend! I'm so glad you came by.
Now, as I told you yesterday, Rob and I were out dancing and singing and having the time of our lives at the kickoff of Jeff Lynne's short ELO tour. He hits Toronto on August 18th at the Scotiabank (formerly ACC) Arena, if you want to try to get tickets for his only Canadian stop.

Ah, least it was a beautiful day to be sitting outdoors. Sunshine, 20C and we enjoyed every second of it. The weather, that is.
After a 12-minute walk to the North Berkeley BART station from our hotel in this university town, our trip to the ballpark took about 35 minutes. We had opted to stay outside Oakland and San Francisco, as it allowed us easy transit to the ballgame yesterday and to tonight's concert.
I couldn't resist taking this man's picture when I saw him on the train. With Rob's encouragement, I got up and went to talk to him.

Boy, does that sum up our lives in the big picture, and summer in the smaller one!
Here we are in August, the lush, eighth month of the year, when the corn is high, the sun is warm and the impending back-to-everything of September is still a glorious 31 days away. We wait all year for these sweet and succulent months, fantasizing about how we'll spend them. For Rob and me, August is a month of adventure. And it began yesterday with my arrival at San Francisco International airport.
