November 30, 2018

Oh my - the last day of November. I think if you follow this journal (and thank you for that) you know what a whirlwind and an emotional rollercoaster this month has been. From saying goodbye to one of our very dearest friends, to travelling to Nova Scotia, then hosting two couples who are very close to our hearts in Palm Springs.

***The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts added another "In Conversation With..." me. Unfortunately, that second show is sold out as well. If you were hoping to come, but were unable to get tickets, please check back here every day and I'll keep you updated about any future events HarperCollins is scheduling.***

Good day, my friend. I awoke to a little bit of a rainbow in my coffee cup yesterday morning, so I knew it was going to be a special one. And it was.

Hey there - welcome to Wednesday. You know all of those fake or phishing emails you get, warning you that an account (with a bank you don't do business with) is shutting down and that you'd better do something promptly to prevent the action? Oh, I'm sure you've gotten them; we even got an email last week from someone within our own banking system warning us of something dire. We contacted our bank and sure enough, someone had stolen this employee's identity and was using their name and title to spread false information (or worse).

Ah, Giving Tuesday. After the orgy of excess following US Thanksgiving (Black Friday and Cyber Monday, to name two of the red letter days on the spending calendar) this day is dedicated to thinking of others and maybe putting your money where their needs are.

For Rob and me, giving back has meant leaning in. I wrote here last year when he was officially made a member of Rotary International; I didn't tell you that a few months ago, I joined, too. Here I am with our president Carolyn Morley, who also happens to be a neighbour of ours.

A quick update: as you may have seen on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter (I do get around), a speaking engagement has been booked for Oakville on February 25, 2019. I was astounded to learn this (via Twitter!) but later the same day, equally shocked to discover it was sold out. I know, it's not Wembley Stadium, but still, it felt pretty amazing.

Yep - it's Black Friday here in the US, or as my dad calls it, "those Excited States." (I know he didn't make that up, but like his #3 daughter, he knows a good joke when he steals one!)

Hey - set the PVR (or as they call it down here, the DVR) and get set for the big Thanksgiving Day Parade, if you have little people to share it with.

I've a movie review for you today, but honestly - what fun cinema experience doesn't include a trip first to the snack bar?

How about some coffee talk today? You know that when it comes to that ol' black magic, I'm really serious. How serious? Let me give you a few examples: Rob actually packed a cappuccino/espresso machine in the car as he drove down to California where we're staying for a few months.

And that's not all: these were in my suitcase for those 16 days on the road this month.

Boy, you sure do keep me on my toes! Thank you for the incredibly positive response to Friday's journal and the details of our new coordinates for the next few months.

(Strangely, we were on our Molly walk yesterday and we saw a sign on someone's lawn that read: "Neighborhoods are for Neighbors. Stop Short Term Rentals." Wow, nothing like that to make you feel welcome. Rob was unpacking the car the other night and a couple walked by. He said, "Hi - we're your new neighbours for the next three months." They just kept walking. Like I said, nothing like feeling welcome.)

Well, here it is Friday. It's also the end of a long couple of weeks that included our dear friend's funeral, a Celebration of Hope (did you see the pics of Mike and me on Facebook?) and two truly enjoyable emcee opportunities with Canada Awards for Excellence and the Canadian Real Estate Association's Real Time: Let's Talk event.

Now that we've put our feet on terra firma for a while, I had to share with you something that I did this last trip that made my traveling life just a little easier. I'll get to it in a moment.

The holiday season - and I mean holidays in the sun - is just about upon us; for some, the escape to warmer temperatures has already begun. Over the years (especially thanks to listener trips) Rob and I have passed through a lot of airports. So it occurred to me to share with you a few things that we've learned over the years.

I hope your week is going well; here we find ourselves halfway through both the week and the month. Time is flying and the Toronto Santa Claus parade is gearing up for this Sunday. Hard to believe - and what great memories I have of being able to take part and represent the only radio station in the parade year after year! Of course, the shouts of "Hi Marilyn!" from some in the crowd were always really great at keeping my ego in check. You have to laugh. I did and still do!

And here we at Tuesday - so I must be in another city. And I am.

Today I've arrived in rainy Halifax, glad to have brought an umbrella, but even happier to be staying at the hotel where tonight's Canadian Real Estate Association event is taking place. I brought a good book and plan to spend the day with it, until it's time to put on the lashes again tonight. What a whirlwind these past two-plus weeks have been! Good thing I like hotels, huh?

Welcome to Monday and I suppose that, for some, the weekend continues. I'll never get having a long weekend around Remembrance Day. Honestly, it's not as if today anyone will be going to a cenotaph, will they? But that's the way it is. Federal offices are closed today.

And we come to the end of another week filled with more news - more sadness - than many of us can take. Another mass shooting in the US. A looming constitutional crisis, also south of the border. The heavy grey of November. I'm sure you'll be looking forward to taking a breather, if the world will allow.

On a much lighter note, we have one last full day together here in Ottawa with the most accommodating couple - and their son - who've made Rob and me feel welcome, despite the unwieldy length of our visit, brought about by Deb Cooper's funeral last week.

Boy, it's strange when the rollercoaster comes to that sudden stop at the end of the ride. You know the feeling: you've built up to the climb, there's the whoosh and excitement and then...with a force that makes your head jerk, it stops. And you're left trying to focus. Out of breath. I didn't realize I'd been holding it until it was too late. And then I was in trouble.

Honestly, is it only Wednesday? I want to talk to you about yesterday - a day in the life. It starts with a 6 am alarm playing Pachelbel's Canon, coffee, a nervous tummy and too many trips to the bathroom. And it ends on a plane in the windy skies, as we head back to the heart of our lives in Ottawa.

Welcome to Tuesday. Before I go any further, thank you for the FB posts (www.facebook.com/erindavispage), Twitter comments @erindavis or emails pointing out that the thermometer we used was likely just supposed to be used briefly in the oven and not left in the turkey. Our favourite method for measuring temperatures is with a probe that has a wire that snakes out of the closed oven door and attaches to a digital readout that sits on the counter. It also alerts you with a persistent beep when your meat is at the temp you desire. We'll try and find one of those to replace the one we melted!

Well, how was your weekend? If it was like ours in Ottawa, you probably had more than your share of clouds and rain and welcomed yesterday's blue skies, as we did. But we were fortunate enough to have our sweet four-year-old grandson Colin to light our way.

Morning cuddles and stories, long meals and plenty of play time made the weekend seem to fly by at the softest, most wonderful pace. We counted ourselves fortunate to have had this extra visit with the joy of our lives, having not planned to come to Ontario before this week until, of course, we lost our friend.

What, Friday already? I'm kidding. This has been without a doubt one of the longest weeks of our lives. And yet, there's a lightness of heart at the end of these five days that I haven't felt for so long. Knowing Debbie's suffering has come to an end, being in the heart of family in Ottawa with Phil, Brooke and Colin and feeling so happy for a friend who has officially begun her new life.
