As winter begins this afternoon and the official solstice occurs, it seems a good time to remind us all that the short, darker days will be turning around and we'll see more light in the coming weeks and months. May that be a metaphor as we face the end of one year and the start of another.
Of course, for many, the lights will shine brightest this coming Monday and Tuesday, as families gather to celebrate the warmth and love of the holidays. How we wish these feelings could last through the year! But that's up to us, isn't it?

Thank you for letting me share what was in my heart here yesterday. I wanted to post an addendum late last night saying, "My day got better!" in case you were at all worried. But, of course, you knew it would get better, just as I did. All it takes is time.

Today I could write about signs from above or Christmas trees, the roadrunner I saw in a parking lot the other day (for real - here's the picture)...

...or the coyotes who leave poop in our neighbourhood and have us on high alert when Molly goes out for her bedtime piddle.

Just one week until Christmas Day now and, oh, how the memories are stirred! If my parents' families' stories are typical, back in the day, people would just now begin thinking about cutting down or buying a tree to put up; my mom would tell me of her dad going out into the bush around their house in Turner Valley, Alberta and cutting down a small tree, bringing it home on Christmas Eve and then they'd decorate it.

Welcome to the start of what, for many, is the final work week of 2018. For others, like our daughter-in-law Brooke, it's the storm before the calm (if you will) with mornings in retail that start at 6 o'clock and end with tired feet. We hope for her (and for you) that the coming weeks include some much-deserved downtime.
It used to be that my November and December were so insanely busy that the minute I signed off before Christmas holidays, a cold would descend on me. It was as though my body said, "Okay, you've stopped fighting now. Time to get sick!"

Oh, I love the stories you shared with me on FB, in light of yesterday’s journal, about the Christmases that you ruined. Thank you so much for your own memories. One reader, as a girl, burst into tears on the big day because she’d already found her Timex watch. Talk about a guilty conscience!

As I get set to wrap up the week tomorrow with another Friday Favourite, I have been reminiscing these past few days about the Christmas I ruined - for myself.

Here we are, less than two weeks from Christmas, and I'm hoping - as are those who've sent gifts through the mail - that the massive backlog of parcels and packages in the main sorting stations in Toronto and Vancouver doesn't mean holiday gift-giving is ruined for far-flung families such as our own.

Thanks for sharing a few minutes here today. Today, a suggestion on how you might like to spend a few hours....
Now that the Golden Globe nominations have been announced (airing Sunday, January 6th) I for one am going to make a point of seeing the titles and performances that have been given the most attention, just to find out what the fuss is about. We're anxiously watching to see when The Favourite hits our area! Huge excitement over that one.

Hello - and I hope you had as restful a weekend as the season allows. It's just two weeks now until Christmas Eve and we're feeling strangely serene given how insulated we are from the whole holiday rush. Presents were handed off to be delivered to our family members in the BC interior; Phil, Colin and Brooke have received and opened their gifts, including my favourite of this year, a collection of three pairs of socks for Colin.

Here we are already at the end of another week and now, something I promised: a Friday Favourite. Today, the spotlight is again on one of my favourite things...sleeeeeeeep.

We'll get to the "Baby It's Cold Outside" discussion in a second...but I want to start today with a special shout-out to a woman who is tiny in stature but occupies a great big place in our hearts.

Today, a legend in Toronto radio is hosting his final morning show. I never had a chance to work with Roger Ashby, but I have vast respect for what he's achieved in this beloved medium of ours, and empathy for the sea of feelings he's experiencing today. I wish him well, always, and many years of joy with his wife Moira. I'll be sending big hugs. And to Marilyn, too. I know what it's like to lose a longtime partner. Smooth sailing, all.

I haven't mentioned it here yet, but a very Happy Hanukkah to you and yours. Now, to switch lanes: you've heard of the Gift of the Magi, right? They're the Three Wise Men and, of course, are a huge part of the story of the birth of Jesus. Well, meet my own Gift of the MAGA: three stories of not-so-wise-men that we've encountered in just the past week down here in California. Here we go.

Suddenly our winter home seems very still. And a little sad. After two straight weeks of company, it's down to just us three: Molly, Rob and me. The laundry's been caught up, the house put back as we found it when we arrived almost three weeks ago and things are as I expect they'll be until our next guest arrives on Christmas Eve. (No, it's not Santa - we don't expect we'll have much of a holiday except for a nice turkey dinner.)
