Just a thought... No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow. [Proverb]
Happy Spring! I may have suggested there wouldn't be an audio journal today; it's a travel day as we head home from Los Cabos in Mexico, a spot we've never visited before.
I thought that I'd have lots of touristy pictures for you, but true to ourselves, Rob and I kind of cocooned at our resort, rather than venturing out. But there will be natural beauty, I promise!
Travel pictures and stories can do one of two things to the person who's looking at them: inspire and interest, or spark resentment. In all of the years of our travels with listeners, the latter was the very last thing we wanted to do.
In early years of our winner trips, my inbox would be splattered with angry letters from people who didn't win and did not want to hear a lot of cheering and fun from a sunny location when they were home in the miserable cold.
I took the criticism to heart, learned from it and altered the way we did our shows: it was never about, "Listen to the fun we're having and you're not!" but more in the tone of, "You could win this kind of a vacation, too..." or, "Here's what we've learned about this beautiful part of the world".
Mostly our aim was to never, ever lose a listener and to make everyone want to tune in for a fun and inclusive show. Those many trips - sometimes taken twice a year - taught me more than even those oft-enforced lessons in "What's in it for the listener?"
Being afforded the fortune and luxury of having so many to compare, they instilled in Rob and me a different set of values for a resort. We were treated (thanks to our listeners) to some of the nicest places, although you never heard about those that fell short out of respect for our hosts and sponsors!
One did stand out for sure: we did a week of shows from a Secrets resort that was five-star all the way and although, truthfully, the trips have all pretty much melted together like wine bottle candles, that one stood out.
Perhaps that's because it was just a year ago and the last listener trip that we went on; perhaps because it happened to have been Mike Cooper's final trip as well.
But we've come to trust the Secrets brand: something that is invaluable when you're just looking at last-minute trip bargains and hoping for the best!
It's because of those listener trips, though, that I found myself pointing out different spots in the resort that would be great for a broadcast!
Whether outside the Market Café restaurant or in a high outdoor patio away from guests and near a ballroom, I can't help noticing and making a mental note of where the best broadcast site would be.
(I told you I'm having trouble letting all of this go! As if all of the work dreams weren't proof enough.)
At any rate, despite outings available to whale watch (January and March are high season, apparently) or for tours of the nearby town of San José del Cabo, we pretty much stayed put on our little swim-up patio or some other quiet spot on the grounds.
I truly wanted to go to provide pictures for the journal, but that would have been the only reason! And that struck even me as kind of a stretch. But we did enjoy a long, hot walk along the beach one day and I wanted to share some shots of that with you today.
There's no swimming because of a dangerous undertow; no chairs are set up at the water's edge. But the colours are so varied, the textures so beautiful, that I hope you enjoy these glimpses of the breathtaking sights from our spot at Puerto Los Cabos on the Baja Peninsula.
I'll be back with you tomorrow with a few more natural wonders we tried to capture and why we're noting a significant "ring" in our family tree. Have a gentle Monday, HAPPY SPRING, and thank you for coming by.
Now, let's take a walk along the beach, shall we?
