Erin's Journals

June 14, 2019

Are we home yet? Is the NBA championship "home" yet? I wrote almost all of this journal during our 90 minute ferry ride at the end of our journey from Kelowna on the mainland to our island home yesterday. Here we go.
I'll tell you, last evening was the aural equivalent of having my eyes just slightly crossed to make sense of one of those 3D posters that used to be everywhere a few decades ago. Except, instead of trying not to focus so we could see, we were endeavouring not to hear so we could later learn a basketball score!

And it's good-bye today to Kelowna, this city of 132,000 in the BC interior that counts among that number, two of my siblings and my dad. While the city itself is about 50% larger than Victoria, the Kelowna metropolitan area claims a population of around 200,000, making it the third-largest metro area in BC behind Vancouver and Victoria.

Hello from gorgeous Kelowna, BC, where Rob and I will stay another night before heading back to our island home. You know, it's funny, just from conversations I had last week, how many people think that Vancouver and Vancouver Island are one and the same; Vancouver being that giant city on the mainland, while Vancouver Island is...well, you know, an island. And that's the place we call home in the city of North Saanich (like sandwich without the D and W). But enough about home - let's be here now!

After arriving safely, and just as the Raptors game ended (One point! Really?), in Kelowna last night, Rob and I were reunited after 10 days apart! That's a long stretch for us. We bunked down in the guest suite at Dad's seniors' residence and look forward to two days here, departing on Thursday to make it back to the Sidney, BC area in time for our semi-monthly Rotary meeting.

Ahhhhhh...what a weekend! I don't even know where to start except at the beginning of it: flying into Ottawa on Thursday night and spending three amazing days with a certain little man and his parents.

IS IT FRIDAY YET? Ha! I'm not complaining, but, oh, it's been a week! One great, busy, wonderful week filled with hugs, laughter, tears and new friends. And, oh, yes, OLD FRIENDS. The best kind.
Like the friends we dined with on Wednesday before the Indigo event in rainy Kitchener. At a restaurant near the bookstore, we were joined by Rogers chief meteorologist Jill Taylor (left), my pal Lisa Brandt and, on the far right, afternoon host on CHYM in Kitchener, Adele Newton.

I'm going to pause in the midst of this week, this frenetic, joyous, travel-filled week, to look at a picture much bigger than the ones I've shared with you over the past few days.
Tomorrow I'll be back to bringing you special moments of meeting with people and sharing stories of love and friendship, of common bonds and new connections.

What a day, what a day. I'm writing to you between shows: we had a 2 pm performance of our Reclaiming Joy program at Markham Theatre yesterday. It went so well and I am so grateful.
This is me before the show and during rehearsal - feeling very zen and ready to go.

Welcome to Tuesday! I'm writing this on the way home from a fantastic event at Chapters in Mississauga last night hosted by Michelle Butterly, my longtime co-worker and friend from 98.1 CHFI

And here we are, back in Ontario! I guess I mean "we" in the royal sense, I suppose, as this time I'm traveling without Robbie. Wish me luck. As I mentioned last Friday, we may have a journal blip or two, but I'm sure it'll go well (gulp)!

Welcome to Friday! Did anybody sleep after that first NBA finals game on Canadian soil last night? History!
I don't think you had to be Jessica Fletcher or Nancy Drew to figure out our happy news today based on yesterday's hint. A few thought that perhaps we were getting a puppy when I said "tickled pink." Um, no. I don't think that's in our future. And sweet Molly is puppy enough, even at 14-and-a-half!

The publicity machine is a funny thing and sometimes - if you're lucky - it churns at a fast and furious pace and sweeps you into all kinds of wonderful directions, as I've found over the past few days.

Welcome to Wednesday! It's a busy one here as we get set for a webinar this afternoon (recorded for those who can't join us, plus there's another planned for an evening in June) from AMA Waterways about the October 2020 Rhine Cruise with a Canadian Twist. We're taking over an entire riverboat, Mike Cooper and I and all of our fantastic guests, and can't wait to learn more about it - as will you today - and our trip from Switzerland to The Netherlands during Canadian Thanksgiving 2020.

Well, how nice it is to see you back here again! I've so been missing writing lo, these past two weeks, but my mind and my editor/IT guy/husband needed a break. A rest and recharge. (Except for the massive excitement of Saturday night's Raptors' win! Now...we await Thursday....)
With just one week until I'm in the GTA again full-speed-ahead for book events, there are a couple of BIG announcements!

Hi there -
I'll be back with fresh journals on Monday, May 27, but I wanted to tell you something I hope will be of interest to you. A NEW DATE has been added to appearances in June - an afternoon in Markham - and I thought journal readers should be among the very first to know.
As you may have seen in the What's Up section of my homepage, I'm coming to Ontario the week of June 2:
June 3 - Indigo Mississauga (7 pm in conversation with CHFI's Michelle Butterly)

Welcome to Friday! I'm saying good-bye here for two weeks as we raise our heads and close our laptops (for longer periods than just overnight) and Rob and I reconnect with each other over the next little bit. As you may know, tomorrow marks four years since Lauren left us. The next day - well, you know what Sunday is. And if you're celebrating it, I hope that you and/or your mom (if you're lucky enough to have her with you) enjoy your day.

What wonderful things will happen today? That's the question with which I start every morning: I ask Rob to tell me something good (he always opens his email first) or I ask myself what wonderful thing will happen today.

Welcome to Wednesday! You've heard of birthday parties, Tupperware parties, cocktail parties, lingerie parties, bachelorette parties and even chicken pox parties, right? Well, let me introduce you to the most UNUSUAL party I've ever heard of. And, like something out of Studio 54 back in the day, everyone is eventually going to end up with their undies off.
Now that I have your undivided attention....

SO...this just in...yesterday afternoon I received an email from Gerry at New Wave Travel and it's looking like an exclusive taking-over-the-boat Rhine Cruise on the AmaStella in October 2020 is becoming a reality. I'll keep you posted; right now we're making sure of details. But I got that note just as I was sitting down to pen this today, so I had to pass it along. More to come when I get back from my little two week sabbatical.
